Press release
Inspired by Friedrich Schiller’s famous quote from 1795, "Art is a daughter of freedom", the new collection showcase offers a thematic journey through the exhibition spaces and reveals new, surprising and unusual juxtapositions. By extension, this offers scope for dialogues between perspectives and immediacy, between intensely coloured paintings and minimalist compositions, and between physicality and landscape. The new exhibition focuses on Alberto Giacometti and Ferdinand Hodler, whose expressive figures and monumental landscapes are linked thematically and artistically to other masterpieces from the collection, including works by Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois, Paul Cézanne, Marlene Dumas and Pablo Picasso.
A separate room is dedicated to the internationally influential sculptor Thomas Schütte, commemorating his 70th birthday. The monographic space was curated with the support of the Fondation Beyeler’s "Young Think Tank" and provides a wonderful opportunity to view a selection of Schütte’s works from the Beyeler Collection in public for the first time.
