New year, same issues? Whether you're coming face to face with the inevitable collapse of your promise of a dry January or you've actually made it this far without breaking your new exercise regime, we salute you and wish you nothing but the best for the year ahead. To add a bit of inspiration, distraction and general pleasure to the daunting newness of January, we have come up with four great art shows to catch during the next few weeks. As always, LOST iN rounds out the offer with their pick for where to catch a cultured-up bite or tipple afterwards.
LOS ANGELES
Cécile B. Evans at Château Shatto
Cécile B. Evans' work is occupied with themes of architecture, isolation, and technology in relation to human emotion. In "Something tactical is coming." at Château Shatto, she reuses the set of her film Amos' World and examines social behavior and humanity.
Bestia
Bestia’s friendly staff serves up well-executed Mediterranean cuisine like gnocchi with bone marrow and a home-run plate of mussels and clams. This place is just as trendy now as when it opened up, so if you haven't booked a table keep your party small to score a seat at the bar.
NEW YORK
Ella Kruglyanskaya at Gavin Brown's enterprise
Fancy bold colors and cartoonish vignettes? Then Ella Kruglyanskaya's at Gavin Brown's enterprise is for you! Her work couples the graphic and the painterly with nods to German expressionism and musings on space and the potential of painting (and its illusions) included.
Flora Bar
The team behind local culinary mecca Estela, led by Uruguayan chef Ignacio Mattos, brings its understanding of simple dishes and bold flavour to this seafood-centric restaurant. Located in an impressive new space within the Met Breuer, it begs for at least a coffee stop.
BERLIN
This is not a love song at PSM
Zooming in on blind spots of society, the concept of intersectionality is tangible in "This is not a love song" at PSM gallery. The broad thematic spectrum of dumping wages, feminist rebellion, and the "Refugee Movement" intertwine in this group show. Don't miss it!
Victoria Bar
Potsdamer Strasse was a streak of urban desert in 2001 when Stefan Weber and friends opened Victoria Bar. He placed his own eclectic art collection on the walls, and devised a drinks list so refined and well-executed Gault Millaut named him “best barkeeper” of that year. The level of quality has remained the same.
ZÜRICH
Heji Shin at Kunsthalle Zürich
Intimacy and (self-)reflection converge in Heji Shin's exhibition at Kunsthalle Zürich, challenging you to reflect on ideas of deception and intimacy as well as on the medium of photography itself. Go there to muse on the variations of representation... and there are portraits of Kanye West, too.
Markthalle
The railway viaduct's arches are filled with stores selling a nice mix of furniture, clothing and art. There's also an indoor market hall that supplies specialty groceries like British cheese, Italian deli foods and produce straight from the farmers. Reserve half a day and spend it strolling the strip, popping into the market to pick up some snacks or dine at restaurants.
